How do I apply? Can I just apply over the phone?

There is no audition process for any class. We will get to know you by reading your application and reviewing your materials.  Risa and Steve review every application thoroughly.

Our application process is all online. There is an APPLY NOW button on each class page that brings you to that class’s ONLINE application. Answer the questions thoughtfully and upload your resume and links to your reel or related camera work (if you don’t have a reel: self-tapes, taped scenes, or selfie videos are fine), to give us an idea of who you are and what you’re looking for. We value the time and effort that got you here and your application is a reflection of that. This is why we do not process applications over the phone.

If you’re interested in more than 1 class, click on the one that excites you the most and follow the steps above to apply. AND indicate on your application what other classes are of interest. Find available classes here.

When I apply for a class, how do you decide if I’m in? Do I audition?

There is no audition needed to apply for any class. Every application is carefully reviewed by Risa and and Steve, and class suggestions or approvals are made based on your availability, interest, and background indicated on your application, as well as a review of your materials. Risa and Steve will offer what they believe to be the best fit for you. They’ve been at this a long time and have a strong sense of where you’ll be best challenged and find growth and support.

But it starts with you- first looking at the website and identifying the classes that speak to you, and then answering each question of the application as honestly and thoroughly as you can.

What is the cost of class and what’s the payment schedule?

Ongoing classes are $275/month, due on the first of every month. 8-week classes are often $650 for the full 8 weeks, broken into two payments. Some specialized 8-week classes vary in price- higher or lower, so check each class page for details.

Is there a level-to-level progression from one class to another?

To keep classes as rewarding as possible for everyone, classes will be suggested to you according to your experience, schedule, and interest. Some Ongoing classes are by invitation only, due to the nature of the work and the shorthand developed over time by working consistently with our BGB Master Teachers, including Risa and Steve. In every case, though, we aim to find the best class fit for every actor and will meet you where you are on your journey.

While some progressive, tiered “programs” (in which actors are “advanced” to the next level) may have their advantages, our focus is on the evolution of each individual actor and our commitment to you doing the deep work of exploration, discovery, and growth.

How do I get to work with Steve and Risa?

Steve and Risa teach their own Ongoing and 8-week classes, and guest teach in other 8-week classes. All of our classes are listed on our website with primary and guest Master Teachers identified on each class page. Visit our class pages here.

Each of Risa and Steve’s Ongoing classes is often full, so we will make alternative suggestions when there is no room or the waitlists are limited, or if Risa and Steve believe that another class would be the ideal place to support and challenge you. They take great care in reviewing every application to find the best fit for each actor.

You do not have to take an 8-week class before joining one of Risa or Steve’s Ongoing classes, but actors often move into Ongoing from an 8-week class that Risa or Steve teach. All our Teachers are aligned with Risa and Steve’s values and have their own powerful practices and workouts that appeal to many of our actors. We encourage you to dive in and get to know our incredible BGB Master Teachers.

Our current available classes are here.

Steve and Risa also do private coaching- career, life, and audition coaching– which is scheduled by appointment only.

What is the difference between an 8-week class and an Ongoing class?

An 8-week class has a definitive start and end date that follows the arc and trajectory of that 8 week class’s journey, whereas each Ongoing class meets 4x/month in a consistent ongoing practice, month after month. 8-week classes might include a few different Teachers, whereas ongoing classes are generally led by the same BGB Master Teacher.

Here’s a bonus: When you’re enrolled in an Ongoing class, you get added FREE classes, services, and products to support your career and take your growth to the next level. Along with a vibrant community of bold, talented artists with whom to collaborate. It’s all pretty exciting! Check it out HERE!

Do you offer audits?

We value the vulnerable, intimate, and sensitive environment that deep work and growth requires in order to develop in class, so we do not offer audits. To satisfy the curiosity of actors who are interested in joining class and our BGB community, we offer our BGB Sit-Down with Risa and Steve – a monthly forum that is free and open to all actors. This open group setting gives actors the opportunity to ask questions, learn more about BGB’s values and how we define real career success, as well as get a feel for the Studio space itself and the classes we offer. To learn more and reserve your spot at the next BGB Sit-Down, click HERE. If you still have questions about classes or the Studio after exploring our website, feel free to email us at

How many actors are in each class? Do we work every week?

Class size varies between 12-18 actors to ensure that every actor gets an opportunity to work each class. When our teachers have a shorthand with actors with whom they’ve worked over several years, an Ongoing class size can increase slightly, but classes are kept to that range to ensure that every actor works in each class every week.

How many classes in an 8-week On-Camera or Audition class are actually on-camera?

Each class varies. Most On-camera/Audition specific classes include the camera almost every week, while other 8-week classes feature the camera a few times, depending on the focus of that class. If you are interested in heavy on-camera practice, be sure to indicate that in your application to ensure you are placed in a class that offers that practice- either 8-week or Ongoing.

How do you choose your teachers?

Many of our teachers come from within our amazing BGB community. Each of our Master Teachers is an accomplished, experienced, working Industry professional with  extensive training and an outstanding working background. Having developed strong relationships with people in the Industry for 40+ years, Risa and Steve also bring in guest artists and professionals from outside the BGB community who are uniquely qualified to offer specialized skills and perspectives to many of our classes. Every teacher at BGB is aligned with our values and practices, and shares our commitment to our actors and the work!

Where do class material/scene selections come from?

Material comes from a number of sources and it varies from class to class.  Scenes may be selected by your BGB Master Teachers, they may come from our BGB Library, and often you will bring in scenes in that you find or even write yourself (yes, our actors write their own scenes!). We offer a BGB Dropbox Library of scenes and scripts to our Ongoing class actors. We believe that finding, transcribing, and writing scenes on your own grows choice-making and leadership skills.

How do we watch our clips from an on-camera class?

Your clips are posted in a Dropbox folder specifically for you to watch and study outside of class. A private link to the class Dropbox folder is shared with you after each class, usually within 48 hours. Confidentiality is important to us and it is expressly prohibited to share or use any footage in any way beyond the class program.

Do we work outside of class?

Some outside preparation will be required for certain assignments. Other class units require no outside preparation.

Generally, we do not encourage actors to meet and rehearse together outside of class, unless they are working on material they’ve written or workshopped together for a particular class project.

How many teachers are in a multi-teacher class? How does that work?

We are lucky to have so many talented, experienced Master Teachers as part of our BGB community, and we celebrate each of their unique backgrounds and styles. We know that there is no “one way” to do anything, and in that spirit, some 8-week classes include a few Master Teachers guiding the journey. Some 8-week classes are lead primarily by one Master Teacher, with a couple of guest teachers to guide you in various techniques and practices. All of our classes are carefully crafted with your growth in mind, first and foremost.

What do I do after I finish an 8-week class?

After your 8-week class we anticipate you’ll know what you need to work on.  Many of our 8-week actors go on to enroll in our ongoing classes or additional 8-week classes to continue their practice! We always have new classes in the works so check our available class page to see where your next journey will begin.

With over 35 years in the industry, experience tells us that actors who are consistently  attending to their artistic life every day and continuing to hone their craft are the ones who are ready for whatever the Industry throws at them. Working out in class consistently, whether an 8-week or ongoing, is a significant way to stay in shape and work consistently.

What is the difference between a Power class and a Core class?

A Power class is an 8-week class that center on a particular teacher’s process and may feature different BGB Master Teachers who guide you through various techniques that will bring you to- and deepen- your unique truthful storytelling. From improv and repetition to on-camera cold reads and scene work, Power classes offer different skills that up your game while bringing you back to the heart of the work. These include Risa’s MasterClasses, Steve’s Core Thursday, Core Tuesday, and more. All HERE.

Core classes (part of our Power classes) deeply and specifically explore and develop each actor’s connection to your truth and humanity, while practicing several different acting fundamentals. These classes sharpen your instrument to an undeniable point and bring back the joy and effortlessness that attracted you to acting in the first place.

I want to practice & get better at auditioning. What are the Audition Intensive or Audition Workout classes?

The Audition Intensives are 8-week classes that features rigorous on-camera audition work. Using a variety of materials and genres, empowering mock auditions that help you dismantle the audition process, self-tape execution and mastery, improv on camera, and the practice of taking direction and executing it truthfully, an Audition Intensive is an 8-week gauntlet that throws you Industry-style curveballs while nurturing your ability to create a positive booking mindset. You will practice working authentically and freely in any room, working with the camera instead of for it. This is the beginning of a long-term practice that forever changes how and why you audition.

Do you cover the technical aspects of auditioning (camera placement, eye-lines, slating…)? What about how to memorize and break down a script? And what about audition nerves?

Our classes cover all aspects of auditioning, both the technical and non-technical. Whether it’s the emotional prep (or pressure!) you experience throughout the process, or the skills needed to manage in the room, our on-camera audition classes are designed to bring you back to the real work that affects the casting team- whether they’re in the room with you or watching your tape. We believe that when you come back to specificity, to a bold personal connection, and to the heart of your work, everything else falls into place and your auditions become collaborative, successful experiences.

What if I’m a theatre actor and want to learn how to act for the camera?

Fortunately, truth-telling is truth-telling, and your work in the theatre translates to your work on-camera if you come back to the core of it, no matter what. Many of our classes offer on-camera practice, wherein you get to work with the camera (not for it), and become more comfortable, trusting your talent- whether there’s a camera there or not. If you are looking for heavy on-camera practice, be sure to indicate that in your application.

Do you offer make-up classes?

Ongoing BGB actors are entitled to one Make-Up Class per month per our Cancellation/Makeup Policy, as long as the office and your TA have 24 hours advance notice. If you follow the process, you will be offered one of our specifically scheduled make-up classes. We do not offer make-ups for 8-week classes.

How do I get career coaching?

Steve and Risa offer one-on-one Career and Life Coaching by appointment. Visit our Coaching page for more information and to book a session.

Do you offer self-tape services for auditions?

We do not offer self-tape services at this time.  Off-camera coaching for auditions is available, and can be reserved by visiting our Coaching page.
