There’s something I really want you to know: When you struggle in your self-tapes + auditions, feel trapped by your nerves, or don’t achieve your artistic goals, I see it. I don’t mean that in some kind of scolding way. I mean that I am there with you, hoping for you, wanting you to feel free, to bring the fullness of your artistry. And when you don’t, I feel it in my gut. It stays with me. I take it home with me. It hurts.

Yes, I know that when you don’t achieve your goals in an audition (or “bomb” the audition) it takes a huge toll on you. I know there’s so much at stake for you. But when you have an experience that leaves you feeling like you weren’t able to express the totality of your talent, like you weren't free, weren’t your true self, I am also affected. And when 38 actors out of 40 have such an experience, I can feel like I have to protect my heart, & not be as open to every actor as I would like.

I can’t speak for every casting director, but I’d venture to say that’s why some casting directors can seem guarded, even cold. Most of us don’t have the capacity to hold each actor’s nerves, aspirations, disappointments, & struggles for hours on end. So we pull away.

Some actors believe that casting directors are at odds with them; like we are the gatekeepers you have to impress. That is not- and has never been- my experience. I am in it with you. I want you to be brilliant. Whether or not you're cast, my day is made better when you are fully expressed. I see you as co-workers in this & when you are able to show up fully in your work, my work becomes so much lighter.

I am invested in you. I want you to feel artistically free, to find joy in your work, to show up with the full force of your talent.

Having a human connection in all your auditions (virtual, in person, self-tapes) is the difference between success and frustration.

No matter the obstacles, always make the effort to find a virtual reader if you don’t have someone who can read with you in person. A human!

→ Why is this important? It’s just not about you (which is why it shouldn't be called a self-tape in the first place!) It's about being fully present and creating an organic, fluid engagement with another human being. And it’s ALWAYS about the other human.
