Ideal for: For working actors looking to master their self-tapes. By application or invitation to be a working participant. No prerequisite to observe. **There are no makeups, refunds, substitutes, transfers, or deferments for any classes.** (Cancellation Policy.)

What is the perfect self-tape? Is that even possible?
There is no perfect. “Perfect“ isn’t human. Or surprising. Or compelling. Perfect is an idea, not a practice or an art.
The perfect “Perfect“ requires letting go of exactness, of a need to control every piece of the work, of trying to be what “they’re looking for” and to “get it right.” It’s being brave enough to throw the rules and restrictions out the window.
No matter what you’ve been told… just following some perceived prescription about self-taping or re-creating an audition scecario is the antithesis of showing up and being seen. The perfect self-tape is actually a living, dynamic piece of work. It’s the magic of a camera capturing a fully-realized, deeply engaged human being who is completely free, alive, surprising, and bold as hell. The perfect self-tape feels like the movie or show is being realized, moving your audience on an emotional level, no matter the genre.
But this requires a significant shift in what you think a perfect (or even effective) self-tape might be.

You’re home and you need something constructive and creative to do, working on your craft, your artistry, and your career.
We are in a unique moment in time when we are seeing each other in virtual spaces every day — when the camera is on and we’re being asked to be fully present in front of it. As actors, you’ve likely had an idea of “acting on-camera” or perhaps you’ve been clueless about it, especially in your self-tapes. But suddenly you’re being asked to show up online, to make Instagram videos, and to put yourself on tape with no direction. Self-tapes reign. And they’re going to reign for a very long time.
When the Industry starts up again, and it definitely will start up again, self-taping will be the first thing we all turn to- especially before in-person auditions resume.
Self-taping has already dramatically increased in the way your work Is being seen, so it’s time to understand how to do your absolute work in the self-tape arena.
You’re now expected to do highly professional, high-level work in your self-tapes. That does not mean technically; that means working with authority- like you would in a film or show- on your self-tape.
Self-taping has amazing possibilities, ways in which you can show up full, present, and free.
The online world of now- on Zoom and other platforms- is creating a new reality of intimacy and presence on camera. This will change our self-tapes forever.

For 3 of the weeks you’ll send in a self-tape and watch together in our Zoom class. 1 week you’ll do it LIVE. This is the perfect platform for your work together. Each week you’ll get real-world input from Risa, and address all of the self-tape challenges and pitfalls, along with learning ways in which to free your work and show up fully on-camera. The material you work on will be a variety of scenes chosen by you and/or Risa/Sydney. You’ll be expected to self-tape directly for class at least 3 of the 4 classes.

My favorite story about Syd is early on when she worked with me on an audition. It was for the role of a plumber, and I had decided that I would play it as a stereotypical tough-guy plumber. Syd coached me to find the part in me, approaching it from a truthful place of innocent, lovable, charm that I naturally possess. At the audition as I sat in the waiting room, I began second-guessing the choice as I heard actor after actor go in and play the tough-guy plumber. I decided to stay the course, though, and brought to life my naïve plumber who loved his job. The casting director reading with me kept reacting to me in the strangest way, and I left thinking that it was a disaster and that I would never work again. I didn’t get the job. However, I was called in two more times by that office for the same show, and each time I found the part from within instead of pretending to be whatever result I thought they would want. On my third effort, I booked the show! A few months later, the same casting director called me in straight to a producer session for a pilot.
That is the essence of what Syd does for me and many others. She takes someone with great potential and acting skills and unlocks work that is truthful, unique, malleable, and ultimately castable! Syd changed my entire approach to auditions. I no longer have the ‘me vs them’ feelings so many of us experience. When given redirects, I no longer have the crushing thoughts of being judged flooding my brain and hijacking my concentration away from the person trying to help me.
